A look back at the 2011 Hors d'oeuvres Under the Oaks
Food and Wine Tasting Benefit

by Evan Welsh, Oak Glen Preserve Manager

A flurry of fall visitors swarm at the apple ranch below, a cool breeze blows as afternoon turns to evening, and at the Oracle Oaks Lodge at The Wildlands Conservancy's (TWC's) Oak Glen Preserve, guest are busy sampling some of the best libations and culinary sensations that the Inland Empire has to offer.

It started as a simple idea: create an event to that would bring donors, TWC supporters, neighbors, and local businesses together to share the things we love most and to raise money for TWC's statewide preserve system and outdoor education programs. The location, a 1905 craftsman house nestled amongst the oak trees, has been host to TWC events since they purchased the Los Rios Rancho property in 1996.

As the last of the tables, tents, and signs went up, a wondrous array of food and drink began to filter in. Mouth watering cakes and treats from Michelle's Bakery and Chocolates by Carolyn made there way through, tantalizing smells from AJ Barile's, Time in a Bottle, and Heska's Sugar Shack specialty foods drifted this way and that, and everyone anxiously awaited the fine wines and unique beers that came from Inland Empire Brewing, State Street Winery, and Hanger 24.

As is usually the case, the good food, refreshing drinks, and beautiful weather led to interesting and lively conversation. The atmosphere was delightfully enhanced by the sweet sounds of The Glenn Robert Band, the country rhythms of the Hilltop Ramblers, and tunes by Scotch and Soda. As guests mingled around the grounds, more and more fabulous snacks were to be found at every turn. The Grand Oak Steakhouse & Bar, Kopper Kettle Kafe, and Eureka Burger hosted tables filled with delicious treats, humus and chips from Phoenicia were served, and there was a definite buzz going around about the irresistible ceviche that was offered by La Costa Mariscos.

With full stomachs and wine glasses in hand, many guests began to turn their attention to recreation and the thrill of the silent auction. Some guests took a relaxing walk on a short trail through an oak woodland, but as the 5pm deadline approached at the auction, frenzied bidders and interested onlookers watched as the fates of art pieces by Steve Herrero (Mill Creek Studios), Lindsay Foggett (Art Naturally), and TWC's own Jack Thompson (Whitewater Image) and Evan Welsh were decided. Guests also bid on a variety of gift baskets, certificates, pottery, and many other excellent gift items.

Eventually, the steady stream of satisfying snacks began to dwindle, glasses began to empty, and the sun began its descent in the west. With full stomachs and happy hearts, guests left knowing that there contributions would be put toward the preservation and restoration of more scenic California landscapes and toward the experiences of the children and adults that will come to experience them for years to come.

Thanks to all that attended the event and showed their support for The Wildlands Conservancy, the vendors, and the silent auction donors at the 2011 Hors d'oeuvres Under the Oaks Food and Wine Tasting Benefit.
