Pioneer Mountain Preserve is the headquarters for management
of more than 37 square miles of land owned by The Wildlands
Conservancy in the southern end of the San Bernardino Mountains.
These strategic properties include "missing links"
that create wildlife corridors and public hiking routes
between the San Bernardino, San Jacinto, and Big Horn mountains;
Joshua Tree National Park and San Gorgonio Wilderness Areas.
Collectively, this is known as our Sand to Snow Project. |

Conservancy landholdings include important wildlife habitat
along the Pipes, Morongo, and Mission creeks and the Whitewater
River. The Conservancy also owns and protects portions of
the spectacular Sawtooth Mountains to the south of Pioneertown
and the volcanic mesas to the east.
Headquarters for the preserve is located at the mouth of Pipes
Canyon in Pioneertown. Visitor facilities are open from dawn
to dusk and include trailhead parking, interpretative displays,
a shade ramada and restrooms. A new group campground will be finished in 2006. A short walk up Pipes Canyon
will take visitors to a creek lined with willows and cottonwoods,
amid slopes with Joshua trees, pinyon pines, manzanita and
scrub oaks.

| The Pioneer Mountain Preserve staff administers
public access to the Mission Creek trailhead and
group camping area. Located in a transition zone
between the Sonoran and Mojave deserts, our Mission
Creek holdings are notable for their rich species
composition, with flora and fauna representing
both deserts. Visitors are surprised to discover
the center of the preserve; a lush wetland juxtaposed
with extensively eroded painted hills and Mount
San Gorgonio looming in the background. |
